It’s been a arduous journey to let go of what went down, how it went down and why it went down. I’ve had to shake it off. Shake off what? The stink, residue and attachment of my previous job.
“Maybe I was still trying to move through a system designed for an earlier stage of my career. But the level I’m operating at now doesn’t move that way.” [saw this quote on substack]
So what have I been up to? I immediately slept for days. My body needed to decompress from that hostile, toxic, traumatic work environment. Then the New Year rolled around, that seems to happen year after year, and I decided I should use my time in a way that would be purposeful and worthwhile until God led me to my next.
By placing myself in different settings, environments and around new people my spirit has truly lifted, my focus has been reset and I’ve been nudged to see things from a new perspective work-wise.
Here’s a peak into the things I’ve done so far in 2026.
- I was a volunteer for Power Rising 2026: Rooted & Rising conference.
- I worked for the first time in an election in Illinois and I was an Election Coordinator in Chicago.
- I was in the first cohort of Oak Park University. It is a 9 week program by the village to create a stronger connection between the community and village hall. I learned a lot about how my local government operates.
- I joined the Win With Black Women IL Leadership Committee in January and immediately was put to work. I’m amazed at the incredibly phenomenal women I get to learn from, listen to, and be associated with.
- The first event I was asked to assist with was Candidate Conversation. I had to find Black Women candidates running for office in Illinois then ask them to participate in the event. Plus other duties but you get the point.
- I learned about Dr. Erica Jordan-Thomas so I wanted to attend an event of hers. I attended the 7 Figure Educator Legacy Tour when it came to Chicago as a chance for me to meet local education business owners and professionals since I’m still pretty new to Illinois.
- I finally live in a city with a WNBA team again so I try to take advantage of attending Chicago Sky games.
- I subbed in to teach for a prayer group for a month. I was able to reach back into the days where I led Bible study. It was nice to focus my energy and attention on something meaningful.
This time has reinvigorated my interest and love for events. I’ll tell you that. Once upon a time in an era long ago that I once lived in, I had an event business with a national tour that did pretty well and I loved what I had created and was able to be part of. And have been trying to recreate that feeling ever since. So being able to have time to participate or attend these events has given me a new type of energy that has been dormant inside of me for far too long.
