The Atrophy of Shame {Video}

This was the sermon I preached during our preaching practicum in ministry school. We were given 8 minutes to preach a scripture(s) given to us. We had no idea when we would be called so we had to be ready to preach at any time. Y’all we had to prepare 6 sermons in 3 weeks. I was beyond exhausted. My mind and spirit were stretched in ways I never knew they could be.

But this particular sermon I was so glad I was called to preach. And I was to go first for my group that day too. I had taken a day off from work that week to get some extra studying and research in. I stayed up ’til midnight the night before. I woke up early that Saturday morning to pray and just sit. I knew this Word was something God had given me to share with my classmates. Who by the way are all phenomenal preachers. We really are amazing and prepared to honor the calling God has given to each of us. I received great feedback from all the Elders about how to improve and ways to ensure that I deliver the message effectively. My classmates gave me great feedback as well. Even my mom listened to it when I sent it to her after class and provided feedback.

In my heart, I know this message is one God will continue to develop through me. They say every preacher has a specific Word for the world to hear. And this just may be mine. Shame is something I dealt with for a very long time and not being in or part of a church for 15 years deepened that shame to a degree. So to be a vessel for this message tells me that all that I’ve gone through is going to be used by God to pull someone else out of their shame.

Here’s my 8 minutes preaching for the very first time in front of like 40+ preachers.

16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

Romans 1:16 (KJV- required translation for ministry school)

FYI: I was beyond nervous. But I survived.
