Rockford Peaches Were in a League of Their Own

One of my FAV films from the 90s is ‘A League of Their Own’. I can’t explain why I’ve watched that film like a million times. Maybe it’s the story of women who were able to break free and go into an area they weren’t allowed to before. Maybe it’s watching something that doesn’t exist in a time where women are supposed to have more rights. Maybe it’s just a really good film. Despite the time period, they should have had Black players as Black women played baseball too. Black women excelled in the Negro league. If you remember in the film, there was a foul ball thrown back into the field of play by a Black woman to Dottie. Some people tried to say she was one of the women from the Negro League. The little glimpse they put in could have easily been a player on a team. But I digress.

Because of this film, I knew of Rockford, IL. Well, that’s all I knew about Rockford, IL. So, it was definitely worth the trip to go see where the original field was when a conference for an association, I’m part of chose Rockford as its host city this year. I stayed an extra day to see where history took place. It’s been updated but there was still a lot of history shared about that field. There were track and field events, football including the Chicago Bears played there as well as many high school games. But most importantly, it was the home of the Rockford Peaches who are an iconic sports team.
