Living Without a Cellphone

December 24, 2021 my phone was cut off. I was going through a rough time in my winter season. I knew it would because at that time I couldn’t afford to pay the bill. I received a phone call from one of my besties checking in on me and wishing me a Merry Christmas Eve that morning. We hung up. Then the phone went silent. And it hasn’t rung since.

My mom keeps imploring me to get another phone since but I’ve refused. There are many reasons I am choosing not to have one. I do understand cases of emergency, the importance of one. Yet, I’m not inclined to get another cellphone anytime soon.

Since not having a cellphone only 3 friends have kept in touch and reached out to me. THREE. My phone which was full of phone numbers yet no one else tried to reach me through any other means. Tells me a whole lot about what type of relationship I had with others. If I wasn’t reaching out to check in on them then we didn’t communicate. And 6 months and counting with no cellphone with no contact tells me all I need to know. God also could have just removed me from that circle because He is taking me in my destined direction

The phone used to blow up with scammers. I mean I signed up for all those do not call lists and they stopped working through a certain chaotic admin. Not seeing or hearing my phone constantly ring from scammers has given me a peace that I didn’t know I needed from a phone.

I don’t even like to talk on the phone. So what’s the point in paying for something I don’t even use unless it’s a necessity?

Also that’s one less bill to pay. Let’s be honest here. If I can save money in this economy then I should do so.

If anyone needs to contact me, I have 4 email accounts plus Twitter and a public mailing address. If it was truly a need to contact me, they would find a way. Remember, I left all other social media but YouTube and Twitter. Less drama. Less notifications. Less people annoying me.

Even with starting a new job, I have yet to get a new phone.

Well let me help you out. I used my brother’s number for emergency contact, I asked for our interview to be virtual (we used Microsoft Teams) and I told them to email my personal email if they need me outside of work hours. Guess what? No problems so far. Plus I don’t even think they figured out I don’t have a phone.

Will I ever get a new phone? Not sure. But right now, I am doing fine without one.

Is it unorthodox in this day and age? Absolutely but I don’t care. I don’t live for anyone other than God and myself these days.

6 months and counting with no cellphone has been a freeing experience as well as an insightful one. Navigating life without one has given me a new sense of life management.
