A brief history of leadership titles in the Bible. This is not a comprehensive list or explanation. But to sum up what you’re familiar with, what their roles are and who God called above all others.
Most often in the Christian community (i.e. churches, ministries, etc) the title of an individual states what type of respect one receives. Well, I’m here to tell you that’s foolishness. All people no matter their level deserve your full respect. The title just tells you the level of responsibility they’ve been given or assigned. NOT how much respect they deserve from you.
In the Old Testament leadership of the people of God was by the family head or patriarch. Then moved to tribal elders who served as representatives. Then local elders who were responsible for the legal action at the city gate i.e. cases for murder and family matters. Elders were eventually referred to as nobility. The people of God asked for a king, so God told Samuel to appoint Saul. God never intended for His people to be ruled by man. Judges delivered God’s people: military + supervisory. Prophets and Prophetesses are God’s mouth to people. Priests are the mediator between God and man.
In the New Testament the official leaders are chosen in recognition of godliness and gifts. This is where your spiritual gifts will place you in positions of power to glorify God and to be used to serve others. Jesus’ appointed leaders were the 12 Apostles. The only position called by God are…
Apostles. They have the greatest responsibility here on earth. Their role is to be with him (to have a relationship with Jesus), to preach (to proclaim the message of Jesus) and to drive out demons (to exercise the authority of Jesus). You can learn more in Mark 3:13-15. The Overseers or Bishops/Elders must be above reproach in all aspects of their life. The office itself is restricted to just men. Now that’s from my research but I believe women can and should be in those positions too. They are to watch and shepherd the flock. A Preacher is a personal witness of God’s saving truth, explaining & applying it to circumstances of the people and the time. A Preacher doesn’t speak on their own but as a mouthpiece of the church they work in.
Scriptures indicate no authority except established by God. The role of leadership is not intended for self-advancement but for service. Spiritual Gifts are used to serve one another as stewards of God’s grace. Faith and obedience are integral to God’s blessing. Being a leader is a blessing so keeping your faith intact and being obedient helps you lead more effectively.
Organization of the Church
1) Ministry centers on spiritual gifts given by God’s grace for His glory as well as to serve others with.
2) Every Believer possesses a spiritual gift.
3) The body of Christ matures and unifies through the diversity of our gifts.
4) In the New Testament, there was organized leadership. But there’s no gap between “leaders” and “non ordained” members of a church. The gift of leadership is to be used to equip all Believers for the work of ministry using their gifts.
5) Spiritual Gifts are to be exercised in love.
