Kamala Harris was sworn in officially on Wednesday, January 20, 2021 and it was a moment that Black women across the nation held in great reverence.
For many of us we never thought we would see a Black President then we helped Barak Obama get elected.
Last year was the first time a Black woman was second on a major party ticket and we mobilized. That mobilization led us to electing Madam Vice President Kamala Harris.
She is the first woman to ever hold a position in the Executive branch. And first to be President of the U.S. Senate. She is the second to preside over the senate. Arkansas senator Hattie Caraway presided over the U.S. Senate on October 19, 1943 as the first woman to do so. This historical moment of a woman Vice President is being written about all over the world in countries that look to the U.S. as an aspirational land of democracy. Well, they learned we have our own problems that surfaced and became a horrifying crisis.
As I watched with sheer excitement as well as relief to see a woman who looks like me becoming the most powerful woman in the world all I could think is; FINALLY. Black women deserve to be elevated and recognized for our genius. To be recognized as capable and qualified leaders. To be elevated as a first choice and not one chosen to come in behind to clean up someone else’s mess.
Kamala Harris is walking into unknown spaces. Spaces that have blocked out all women for 244 years. Spaces that have been regulated to white men only. Now this Jamaican-Indian woman, daughter of immigrants, will show the world what a U.S. Vice President is capable of doing. Her role will be significantly larger than all her predecessors. She will be held to a much higher degree of speculation. All her moves will be scrutinized beyond recognition.
However, Kamala Harris will shine throughout it all. She has moved with grace and class through each position she has had. She has not let her missteps or mistakes keep her bound. The lessons she has learned from them will come in handy when challenges arise.
Most Powerful Woman in the World
Finally, to see a Black woman sit at the head of tables to lead world conversations is such an incredible sight to behold. She is standing on the shoulders of so many Black women who have fought, bled and died to give us a voice. All I can say is I’m so ready to see Kamala Harris step into the role as the most powerful woman in the world.
