How to Study Scripture F.A.S.T.

Fast is relative to time. What is time? Time moves according to how we interpret it. We can’t get it back so we should make the most of it. Whether it’s 5 minutes or 5 hours, time can go by quickly. The F.A.S.T. scripture study method will walk you through how to study God’s Word and feel like you invested your time worthwhile.

Write a scripture down. Then work through the steps in the F.A.S.T. method. This will help you gain an in-depth insight into not just your interpretation of the scripture but applying it to your life as well.

How to study scripture F.A.S.T.

F- Find keywords: [pull terms that strengthen the scripture or you want to explore then define biblically.] I use this tool to help me define the words https://www.biblestudytools.com/dictionary/ Some words won’t be found there so you’ll have to use a regular dictionary.

A- Apply terms to scripture:  [rewrite the scripture using definitions. This helps to cement the meaning of the scripture.]

S- Scales off:  [open your eyes and see if you’re living according to that scripture. If not, think of a solution to help you get there.]

T- Testament:  [seal the Word with a prayer. A covenant between you and God.]

Let’s do an example.

(It’s typed out because y’all wouldn’t be able to read my handwriting. And that’s just the God’s honest truth 😬)

Scripture

Teach me to do your will, for you are my God; may your good spirit lead me on level ground.

Psalm 143:10 (NIV)

F= find keywords

  • Teach-  instruct in ways of the Lord
  • Will- meaningful moral choices
  • Spirit- vital powers or strength
  • Ground- basis or foundation

A= apply terms to scripture

  • Instruct me on what moral choices I must make. You’re my God and I will listen to You. May your power guide me to the basis of my foundation as a follower of Your way.

S= scales off

  • I am actively engaged in letting myself be guided by God in all that I do or want to do. There are hiccups here and there but I am conceding more of my decision-making to God through prayer. I want to be a person with a high moral ground rooted in God’s truth. So I must remind myself to push my ego to the side and submit myself to prayer to receive the answers on what morally I should do in the situation I’m in.

T= testament

  • Y’all my prayer was 4.5 pages. I’m not typing that. Just know I spoke to God that day.

Yes, this is a scripture I did in my journal. One I sealed with prayer as I closed out February 2021. It was a confusing month for me when a particular situation popped up out of nowhere. So a friend sent me 3 scriptures and this was one of them. I did the F.A.S.T. method on all 3 and will be able to refer back to these scriptures over time to continue to cement it in my heart & head.

Now it’s your turn. Choose a scripture and practice the F.A.S.T. method. The time spent studying God’s Word in-depth is invaluable to your soul.
