Faith Ringgold’s American People

Last year I went to Faith Ringgold’s last art exhibit at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago. I’ve always wanted to see her work in person. Her quilts were how I first learned about her artistry.

It’s been hard to put into words the beauty, significance and awe I experienced when I went to see her ‘American People’ show.

The last few weeks her work has just stayed present in my mind due to everything that’s happening in this world. Her work illustrates to me the complexity that Black Americans navigate in a country that doesn’t always view our full humanity. Her work tells stories that we can’t speak but yet feel. Her work expresses our collective emotion. Faith Ringgold’s funeral scene was quite possibly one of the most emotionally stirring art pieces I’ve ever laid my eyes on.
