This year I looked more into how Juneteenth was celebrated in Oak Park, IL. It was a multi-day event. Overall, I would say it was nice as far as acknowledging the day but I didn’t see much on why the day is being celebrated. It started with the flag raising at City Hall. Then a Saturday afternoon Community Cookout.
While at the cookout I was finally able to try Robinson’s ribs and yes they were good. Definitely will have to go into the restaurant and get a plate. At the cookout they had performances by different local groups. It was truly a community atmosphere. It was a fun, relaxing and welcoming aura. The Oak Park Public Library has a Juneteenth themed idea box as well as hosted a Journey to Juneteenth Celebration and there was a community bingo game for kids to learn about Black Americans in the area. And if you like to combine history and exercise there’s a self-guided bike tour that will teach you more about Black Americans who helped to shape Oak Park and surrounding areas. I’m learning that it doesn’t matter how people celebrate Juneteenth as long as you understand this day’s importance.
