I can’t think of a time I wasn’t in the state of Texas for Juneteenth. Whether I was celebrating it or not, I was at home. Except this year. Now that I live in Chicagoland, I was able to experience Juneteenth from a different perspective. An outside perspective. And what I experienced was interesting. That’s the best way to put it. Why? It just seemed like whatever they were already doing they just added the word ‘Juneteenth’ as the title yet it wasn’t directly connected to the true essence of the day. You know how people treat MLK Day. Throwing in a speck of how the day came to be is the most I got from the things I participated in if they even did that. So what did I do? I went to a “BBQ” and lecture at a college, a festival and tour at DuSable Museum, Janet Jackson concert with Nelly opening and ended up listening to a conversation with Nikole Hannah-Jones at the public library. Not exactly Juneteenth but a good time was had overall.
