It’s been 2 and a half weeks since you gave your victory speech. Since then the world has recognized you as the first woman, first Jamaican/Black, first Indian American, first HBCU grad, first divine 9, first South Asian to hold this distinct honor of being Vice-President-elect. I was excited at the thought of Joe R. Biden choosing a Black woman for the Supreme Court but even moreso for him to choose a woman as a running mate.
I had prayed he would choose a Black woman. For far too long we’ve done the work to keep things moving forward, operating, improving yet receiving none of the perks, rewards or recognition of our contribution. And you as well as Biden made it clear to the world that Black women are the backbone of democracy.
I would say even when we sure don’t feel like doing the unnecessary. We do. We always do. We do because it allows us to imagine a better future for our families and communities.
To see a woman in your position. In the highest branch of our government. To be second in command of an administration the world is looking to restore order, I tip my hat to you.
The responsibility you have stepped into with tenacity, grit and authenticity we haven’t seen in your new office is refreshing. I pray for you because unless one has been a leader they won’t understand the subtle pressure that feels stronger than the perceived or expected pressure. I pray for you because you are in a position that has to not fail. The expectations placed on your shoulders because you are a Black woman is greater than anyone can imagine. I pray for you because your safety is paramount and we must pray for those who are there to protect you. That they are covered so they are doing their job to the best of their ability.
Kamala Devi Harris you have been a cathartic release for so many Black and women of color with your historic win. You standing in the fullness of who you are is making it hard for the world not to see you. Thus, making the world NOW see us.
I know you have a lot of opinions coming at you on what you need to do. The only advice I will give is to exhale throughout the day. Sometimes in the midst of a day we forget to just breathe. I am excited to see you lead over the next 4 years. I am motivated and encouraged by you. Thank you for being willing to accept the assignment God has placed on you. I pray nothing but success and for you to thrive in your new position as Madam Vice-President of the United States of America.
With the best of wishes,
