This month I’m celebrating 9 years as a paid professional blogger. That’s right. I’ve been paid to blog since 2011. Even though I started blogging in 2009, it was just an outlet to express myself. Then September 2011 rolled around and I decided I would make blogging a career option for me. Now here we are 9 years later and I’m still creating content that is authentically transparent. On this blog I will talk about ways to fight injustice especially using my faith to shed light on things Jesus wouldn’t approve of. Before anyone says anything, I’m no expert on what Jesus would say or do but I have a pretty good idea on what he wouldn’t say or do.
I enjoy politics. Even had a few people, when I still had my personal Facebook page, suggest I start a political blog. But that just wasn’t where God wanted me to go. Okay, it’s not what I wanted to do. Let me be honest. However, I still like to stay informed on what’s happening. Plus, this blog will talk about fighting injustice. So, there’s no reason why I shouldn’t talk about voting especially during an election year on my blog.
Let’s rewind for a moment. I went to D.C. in high school as part of the Presidential Classroom program for high school students interested in politics. And I like to call out Texas U.S. Senators for their ineptness. I was a poll worker at 18. At first it was to get extra credit for my government class in college then I found out they paid. So, I worked the entire early voting period and election day in 2002. My last teaching assignment in 2018 was teaching a Citizenship class to refugees. These are just some of the things I’ve done from an early age to now regarding politics. I may not be as engrossed in politics as I should, but I am involved in ways that work for me. Oh, I also did this podcast episode after the 2016 Presidential election.
To end this month’s series where I celebrate my divine 9 year blogaversary,
I want to share 9 reasons I’m voting for Biden-Harris 2020:
- They are both competent. There’s proof of a successful track record of legislature that has helped communities in some form or fashion.
- They both have experience in government. And not for show but where they led and made the hard decisions. Plus stand by those decisions and make changes or admit they could have done better.
- They both can execute a plan they create. Let’s start with they can create a plan. If you go to their campaign website you can read all the plans they have proposed.
- The importance of nominating new Justices on the Supreme Court. We unfortunately lost Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. She held on as long as she could and we owe it to her to ensure her seat is filled by a level-headed person. Her voice on the bench will truly be missed. We can’t allow ulter-conservative religious zealots to dictate the law. Not just on the Supreme Court but all federal appointments.
- They can restore alliances around the world. The allies we do have were once foes. That should tell you everything you need to know about who America is hanging out with at the moment. I’m not one for the imperialism that has garnered power for America. But I am for working with others and Biden just has a better rapport with other world leaders.
- They will restore the ACA. This was a golden jewel in the Obama administration and Biden was a key figure in shaping it. Both Biden and Harris understand how important it is for all Americans to have access to health insurance especially in the midst of a pandemic.
- They will focus on racial unrest. Both have taken time during the campaign to speak with families who have lost loved ones through horrific situations. Harris being a Black-Indian woman also adds a depth to the connection and understanding of what’s happening in minority communities across the country.
- Harris will be the tie-breaking vote in the Senate. If at any time the vote is a tie in the senate the Vice President is the deciding vote. It’s rare but that vote could make a huge difference. Also as Vice-President, Harris will have access to speaking with the Senators (which she already has a relationship with because she’s currently a Senator) about issues that the President wants resolved, bills to pass into law, committees making decisions on world affairs and so much more we as regular citizens aren’t privy too.
- We’ll FINALLY have a woman in the Executive Branch. I don’t know about you but I believe it’s past time. The highest we’ve gotten in the past is Secretary of State. Yes, that’s an uber important role. The Secretary of State pretty much is the person who goes around the world representing our country in person. But it’s not an elected position. They are just approved or not approved by Congress. So essentially, we as voters have no direct say in who gets to be Secretary. But we do get a say in who gets to be Vice-President. And for me to be able to vote for a Black-Indian woman just makes me extremely happy.
We hear it every 4 years that this is the most important election of our lifetime. To be honest, that wouldn’t be the case if we turned out to vote for city, county and state elections. When we have people in those elected positions working for the people then it doesn’t make the federal elections more amplified. Or more important. I learned there’s 500,000 elected positions in this country. Yet, we only focus on a handful at the federal level.
When you go vote this November 3rd (I hope you either vote early or by mail, if you can) remember to pay attention to the down ballot. That’s all the people running in races you probably haven’t heard about. When all elected officials are working for the good of the people it makes the Presidential race not as glorified. We must focus on local because those are actually the ones who impact your life on a daily basis. Property taxes, potholes on your street, your kid’s school, new jobs in town and so much more is determined at the local or state level.
But having the right President impacts our country’s standing and respect on a global stage.
Go to your county election website (County Clerk office in Texas) and get a sample ballot. For Harris County you fill in your info so it gives the ballot you would fill out on election day. That way you can start looking at who’s running and be prepared to vote from President all the way down not just to local positions but propositions that will impact your local community as well.
