Brunch and Books: Getting To Happy Terry McMillan

Getting To Happy Terry McMillan’s sequel to Waiting to Exhale is absolutely one of the best books I’ve read on friendship. This was a true turn pager. I couldn’t put this book down. Way into the early morning I wanted to know how Savannah, Robin, Bernadine and Gloria were handling their situations and being there for each other. Even though people know me for business this book is for anyone who wants to keep their sanity in business. You have to have a close knit tribe of support around you at all times. You honestly can’t do it on your own.

If nothing else, I will leave you with these 3 things about what true friendship really is:

  • Choose friends who get you. Not who try to force you into a category that fits them.
  • Choose friends who make you laugh. No matter what situation you are going through they will find a hilarious point of view just to get you out of that funk.
  • Choose friends who will drop what they are doing to be of support when you need it most. These are the friends who are willing to put their ego to the side and be what you need in that moment.

From my own personal experience, friendships are the reason I’ve kept Women Are Gamechangers going when I felt tired or defeated. My friends have been there for me when I needed emotional support to get through personal situations that affected my way of thinking to operate my business. My tribe is the reason I got my fire back to continue on this entrepreneurial journey even on the hardest of days. I love my tribe and forever grateful we crossed paths.

In business, you will have dark days. Without having a close knit tribe around you for support how are you really managing your emotional health?

Here’s what I had to say about Getting To Happy.
